Heat oil in a skillet on medium.

Cook stirring often until onions are translucent and mixture is fragrant about 5 minutes in a large crockpot combine onion celery carrot mixture with half of the vegetable juice. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low and cook for 15 minutes. Stir in spices and diced tomatoes.
Drain excess fat and return to pot. Add butter and boil until potatoes are tender but not too soft. Just before serving stir in milk and salt and pepper.

In a medium stock pot cook beef onion and garlic over medium heat until onion is tender and beef is slightly pink in the center. Add in the diced onion celery carrot and garlic. Add the canned tomatoes broth or stock worcestershire sauce and v8 juice.
